• 28 Feb 2024: Mouse disable patches updated (Patch set ver.20240205) with a small change to fix an oversight that could cause unusual behaviour. There should be no change in practice.

General

• Many of the fixes, including the music patch and gamepad fixes, need to be installed in the Patch Installer section.
• Both gamepad patches (d-pad diagonals/360° analogue) require that you map Up/Down/Left/Right to the d-pad (not the analogue stick) in-game. Neither patch will work otherwise.
• Patches directly modify the game files. Once they're installed you can stop using the Launcher if you prefer to launch the game another way.
• Speedrunners using version 1.3.2 or earlier should not enable the Numpad Weapon Hotkeys patch. A bug in that version allows you to equip weapons in situations you should not be able to (e.g. in Medical Room), and will invalidate your run. Update to 1.3.3 or higher to get a fixed version of that patch, or make sure it's disabled if sticking with 1.3.2.

Music Patch

What it does:

• Replaces existing music tracks with higher quality/looping ones, and adds missing tracks.
• Makes the correct tracks play in all areas.
• Stops the game from applying a fade-in effect at the start of most tracks.

How it does it:

• The user downloads a music pack containing the replacement/new tracks, and copies them to the MDX folder.
• Edits the game's area→track-ID table to point to the correct themes (some tracks).
• Interrupts the game shortly after some track-IDs are chosen and jumps to a (code cave) section of custom instructions. This code checks for certain game situations (most bosses, Ninja's "sting", Gray Fox's monologue, Medi Room after defeating Johnny), and overrides the track-ID.
• Changes the fade-in duration for BGM from 500ms to 0ms.

Weapon & Cheat Hotkeys Together

What it does:

• Makes the game follow both the "weapon hotkeys" routine and the "cheat hotkeys" routine, instead of only one of them.
• Requires that

  -cheatenable

  is selected.

How it does it:

• Changes the target location for two jumps (more info later).

Numpad Weapon Hotkeys

What it does:

• Adds the ability to use the number pad buttons as weapon hotkeys (not cheat hotkeys), in addition to the normal number row.

How it does it:

• Removes the original weapon hotkey routine (which handles each key in its own set of instructions) to create a code cave.
• Uses the code cave to recreate the weapon hotkey routine more code-efficiently (using the same set of instructions to loop through each key).
• Adds a second check for the corresponding number pad key to the new instructions.

Numpad Item Hotkeys

What it does:

• Adds the ability to use the number pad buttons as item hotkeys, as well as the 0 and . buttons to unequip your item/weapon.
• The items are organised into groups, with repeated keypresses alternating between any available items in that group.

How it does it:

• Removes the original weapon hotkey routine (which handles each key in its own set of instructions) to create a code cave.

Native Diagonal D-Pad Controls

What it does:

• Extends the input handler so that d-pad-mapped diagonal inputs (which are distinct from cardinal inputs, and so normally result in no movement at all) correctly produce diagonal movement.
• To achieve this, diagonal inputs on the d-pad are copied over to both of the corresponding cardinal inputs (e.g.

  UpLeft=On

  will produce

  Up=On

  and

  Left=On

  ).
• The cardinal directions must be mapped to the d-pad in-game, not the analogue stick.

How it does it:

• Interrupts the game immediately after the controller input has been processed, and jumps to a (code cave) section of custom instructions, which...
• Iterates through each cardinal direction (UDLR). Taking Up as an example, the existing input for Up is

  OR

  'd (combined) with the inputs for UpLeft and UpRight, meaning Up is considered pressed if any of Up, UpLeft or UpRight were pressed.

Native Analogue Controls

What it does:

• Re-enables an unused input handling routine that mimics the input handlers in the original PlayStation release.
• The unused routine has a digital mode, and an analogue mode which has a digital section and an analogue section. Immediately afterwards, there's a copy of the digital handler which is actually used by the game.
• Uses the first analogue stick to generate a valid set of axis inputs for the analogue input handler, and passes it to the Analogue+Digital handler.
• The cardinal directions must be mapped to the d-pad in-game, not the analogue stick.

How it does it:

• Removes the original digital input handler used by the game to create a code cave.
• Removes the

  if (false)

  -esque condition (which normally skips over the unused routine), and uses the freed space to jump to the code cave.
• Uses the code cave to take a set of (-1000 to 1000) axis inputs from the first analogue stick, and roughly normalises them to (0 to 255).
• The arithmetic used is: signed divide by 8; add 5 if positive; add 125. This method is used because of code-space limitations; it results in very small inaccuracies that don't cause any issue in practice.
• Places the normalised axes where the analogue input handler will look for them, then jumps to the start of the unused routine.
• Fixes(?) an apparent bug in a comparison near the beginning of the unused routine, that would cause it to always skip over the analogue input handler.

Disable Mouse Input

What it does:

• Stops the game from treating mouse movement as cardinal directions in menus.
• BUG: For some users, a constant phantom mouse input may interfere with control mapping.

What it does:

• Stops the game from locking the mouse cursor to the game window when the game is focused.
• The game must be using software mode graphics for this to function. I think.

Clearer Controller Options UI Text

What it does:

• Changes the text in the Controller Options menu to be easier to understand.
• Fixes a bug that causes XInput (Xbox controllers, DS4Windows, etc.) LT and RT inputs to be swapped in the Controller Options menu.

How it does it:

• Modifies the raw text strings in the executable to change the wording.
• Modifies the instructions that apply the LT/RT mapping so that instead of applying

What it does:

• Creates a new set of command-line arguments

Gamepad in Background

What it does:

• Allows the gamepad to be used to control the game, even if the game is not in focus.
• The keyboard can not be used to control the game if not in focus.

• Modifies the game's call to the DirectInput

  function (which decides how strongly the game attaches to the gamepad, with regards to other programs), to remove the

  DISCL_FOREGROUND

  option, and add the

Audio in Background

What it does:

• Has the game continue to play game audio when the game is not in focus.

How it does it:

• Modifies how the game sets up its sound buffers, adding the

  DSBCAPS_GLOBALFOCUS

  option.

Fix Blank Save Bug

What it does:

• Fixes a bug that, in some situations (typically with small numbers of saves), causes one save game to disappear in the Load Game menu and be replaced by a corrupt "blank" save.
• The bug is caused by a programming error in a manually-coded bubble sort algorithm (used to sort the save games by modification time). On each iteration of the algorithm, it continues for one save too many, and enters into a "slot" that contains unknown data. If the "date" in this slot is later than that of the last (alphabetically) legitimate save, the nonexistent save will be swapped into the displayed list of saves.

How it does it:

• Modifies a number in the algorithm so that it stops one slot earlier than it normally does.

No Psycho Mantis Controller Check

What it does:

• On PSX, Mantis is designed so that, when you're using the controller in port 1, he'll dodge seven accurate shots in a row, then take a hit from the next one.
• On PC, the gamepad is considered port 1 and the keyboard is port 2 for this purpose, which is both non-obvious, and can be very awkward to play.
• Technically, at the moment when hit/dodge is decided, the game looks at which "controller" last changed the effective input, and takes that as the active controller. This is why you can get away with only using the keyboard to shoot, and why you can sometimes miss anyway - there's a short gap between firing and hitting where you can affect the input.
• This patch modifies the controller check to stop Mantis from dodging based on controller port.

How it does it:

• Takes the controller port comparison, and removes the jump that would normally occur with port 1.

Remove Radar Restrictions

Variants

• Radar on All Difficulties: Ignores the "No Radar" flag set when you choose Hard or Extreme difficulty.
• Radar in Jamming: Ignores Jamming state when deciding whether to show the radar.
• Radar in Evasion: Changes the alert state logic for the radar from "in Infiltration" to "not in Alert", so the radar is displayed in Evasion.

Evasion% & Alert%

These patches are challenge modes that force you into alert states. Evasion% works without issues, while Alert% is currently buggy and you may not be able to complete the game.

Evasion%:

• Resets the alert state to Evasion at the start of every area.
• Evasion will run out as normal if not seen.

Alert%:

• Resets the alert state to Evasion at the start of every area.
• Evasion will not run out over time, meaning you're always in Evasion or Alert if there are guards in the area.
• Allows elevators to be used as normal in Evasion.
• BUG: Dock can not be cleared, as the elevator does not appear. If playing Alert%, load a save starting at Helipad.
• BUG: In some situations, the button to call some elevators can't be pressed.
